WATCH: Thousands of litres of seized alcohol poured down the drain

Police hope that putting an end to the illegal liquor trade may make the communities a safer place.

The Reiger Park police have again disposed of confiscated alcohol. This time, officers destroyed about 2 000 litres of booze in their storage facility, Boksburg Advertiser reports.

Police officers involved poured more than 1 320 bottles of beer down the drain at the police station on April 24.

According to the newly-appointed Reiger SAPS spokesperson, Const Jan Mokwana, the disposed of alcohol, worth thousands of rands, was seized during a recent blitz targeting illegal shebeens in Reiger Park, Ramaphosa and Delmore informal settlements.

Mokwana added that in their policing precinct alcohol is seen as being the largest contributing factor to anti-social behaviour and other crimes, including domestic violence and assault.

The crates of empty bottles were taken back to the breweries.

The same police station also destroyed about 2 000 litres of confiscated alcohol in its storage facility early in September last year, and more than 500 litres of alcohol was destroyed in November last year.
