In a statement, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba said the operation will be conducted on a daily basis, on a ward-based “raid” initiative.

The operation will see collaborative efforts between all key City departments and entities such as Disaster Management, Environmental Health, Social Development, Infrastructure Services, the City’s legal department, and Development Planning.

“The operation’s main focus will be to ensure city bylaws are adhered to by all within the City and that the rule of law becomes the order of the day,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba also stressed the importance of bringing back the rule of law in the City in order to rid the City of its criminal elements.

“The City, working with all state enforcement agencies, will not leave any stone unturned when dealing with criminal activities within our area of jurisdiction,” Mashaba said.

Mashaba added that Operation #BuyaMthetho aims to affirm the City’s commitments in ensuring that rot in the city is stopped in order to make it a prosperous and inclusive place for all to live, work, and play.

Mashaba said he was hopeful that Johannesburg residents will support the initiative and report crime and criminals to relevant authorities.
