‘I was not involved, I was working on my car’ – son of Mooinooi murder-accused

The 29-year-old son of the so-called ‘mastermind’ behind the Mooinooi murders appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ court on Friday, saying that “he was not involved in the matter, I was working on my car.”

“Every time when they (Joey and Anisha van Niekerk) arrived, I was working on my car,” he said to prosecutor Christine Molautsi, Kormorant reports.

The man allegedly worked for his father in the workshop on the slain Van Niekerk couple’s property.

He said that his father gave the rent money to him each month to take to Joey and Anisha.

He is the first suspect not to accuse the police of brutality. He maintains that he was only accused 12 days after being incarcerated. He was arrested while visiting his girlfriend’s grandmother’s house in Rustenburg.

Molautsi pointed out that the prosecutor would not accept a case that he has not been accused of.

Shortly before the court adjourned, Judge Semakaleng Thamage warned the accused not to communicate with family members of the victims. He allegedly threatened them while in the pulpit.

Thamage also warned members of the public not to communicate with the accused.

The cross-examination of the 29-year-old man is set for Tuesday, 30 January.
