Police search for missing girls in KZN

The two sisters from Beneva area in Esperanza, Umzinto, went to cut firewood near their home, but failed to return home in the afternoon.

Umzinto police and Port Shepstone Search and Rescue members yesterday (Sunday) responded to calls from family and friends of Tracey Mimi Makhanya (17) and Luyanda Lulu Makhanya (15) after they failed to return home on Saturday afternoon, Mid South Coast Rising Sun reports.

The two sisters went to cut firewood near their home on Saturday, January 13 at about 2pm, but failed to return home in the afternoon.

When police went to the area where they were cutting wood, only their bush knife and an empty liquor bottle as well as a glove were found next to the road.

Detectives from Umzinto started questioning possible witnesses who last saw them and W/Off Francois Pretorius and W/Off Marc Wiid from Port Shepstone Search and Rescue searched the surrounding bushes, but with no success.

However, it was later established that they were seen by a male person on Saturday afternoon and that the one sister in fact slept over at his house and left the next morning (Sunday).

Further searches at nearby clinics proved fruitless. Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts can contact D/Sgt Pumlile Khumalo on 072 418 5391.
