Two grade 12 learners committed suicide after receiving their final examination results via an sms on Friday morning, Mpumalanga News reports. According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, an inquest has been opened for both learners.
“The first learner is a 19-year-old from Schoemansdal [Limpopo] and he hanged himself with an electric cord after he learnt that he failed matric. The other learner is from Waterval Boven [Mpumalanga] and he hanged himself with an electric iron cord after he learnt that he passed with a higher certificate.”
“At about 08:00 police from Schoemansdal received a complaint of a young man who has hanged himself. Police attended the scene and found him laying on the floor with an electric cord on his neck while another cord was still hanging from the roof. Investigations revealed that he hanged himself after finding out that he has failed,” said Hlathi.
The police from Waterval Boven received a phone call at around 11:55 informing them about an 18-year-old boy that hanged himself.
“On their arrival at the scene they also found him on the floor. Preliminary investigation revealed that he hanged himself using an electric iron cord after he received his matric results and find that he passed,” said Hlathi.
