Listeriosis is a foodborne disease that recently broke out nationally, and has hit Gauteng the worst.

Speaking at a media briefing earlier this month, Minister of Health Aaron Motswaledi said approximately 557 cases had been reported, while 36 people had already died of the disease, with the province reporting 62% of the cases.

The disease associated with a wide variety of foods, including dairy, meat, vegetables, fruit and ready-to-eat products.

South Africans were urged to wash their hands and keep food at safe temperatures.
