Umbumbulu policeman gunned down on R603

MEC denounces crimes against policemen and urges community to share information with police investigating the heinous crime.


Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda has condemned the killing of a police officer in Umbumbulu yesterday (Tuesday, 5 December), South Coast Sun reports.

Preliminary investigation reveals that at about 5.45am, Captain Amon Zungu (43), who was stationed at Umbumbulu SAPS’ detective branch, was travelling along the R603 between Folweni and Umbumbulu on his way to work. It is alleged that a vehicle with four occupants was seen following him. The suspects opened fire at the police officer, fatally wounding him. The criminals fled the scene without taking anything.

A case of murder was opened at the Umbumbulu police station, and police are investigating.

Kaunda condemned this heartless killing.

“It is so unfortunate that we still have people who see our men and women in blue as enemies. We urge the police to leave no stone unturned in finding the culprits. We also call on members of the community to work closely with the police and provide information which could lead to the arrest of the criminals.

Kaunda sent his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Captain Zungu. He cautioned the police to be vigilant and not to walk alone, especially when they are on duty.
