22 arrested for drunk driving on the M4

Several motorists were also fined for driving without a licence during the roadblock on the M4.

The South African Police Service held a roadblock on the M4 just before the Virginia off-ramp in Durban on Sunday night, resulting in the arrest of 22 drunk drivers, Northglen News reports.

This means that in the last 13 roadblocks held at night, more than 180 drunk drivers have been arrested and charged. According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, several motorists were also fined for driving without a licence.

“Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanor, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice. We have a zero-tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ is ridiculous. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.

Last month, a 21-year-old man was arrested after driving into a roadblock on Umgeni Road, injuring a police officer.

Senior superintendent of the metro police Parboo Sewpersad said: “Recently at roadblocks we have seen an increase of public transport drivers and taxi drivers driving under the influence. We will be clamping down on these taxi drivers who possibly face their driver licences withdrawn for life. Taxi Owners also must be warned of drivers in their employ.”
