Grace wants $1bn university to be built in Mugabe’s honour – report
Should her demands be acceded to, the university would be built on one of her farms.
Deposed Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace, was reportedly among the key players in negotiations held on Thursday and Friday following the 93-year-old leader’s resignation this week.
Grace, according to a Sunday Times report, pleaded with Zimbabwe’s new leaders to allow her to keep her farms, and wanted a $1 billion (about R14 billion) state-of-the-art university to be built on one of her farms, and named after her husband.
Among her requests reportedly included:
- All the Mugabes’ properties – including more than 10 farms – being given protection.
- All streets and structures named after her husband remaining unchanged.
The deal is said to have also included Mugabe’s $10-million (about R140 million) pension payout, inclusive of all previous benefits that he enjoyed when he was in power.
“It is too early to tell whether the new government will fully agree on some of her proposals,” a source was quoted as saying.
