Metrorail trains operating in the south of Gauteng have been delayed due to signal control panel failures on Friday morning.
Trains running between Johannesburg and Vereeniging, Naledi, Randfontein, Springs, Pretoria, Tembisa and Daveyton will experience an average of 60-minute delays this morning. Trains from Tembisa will turn around at Germiston to avoid congestion towards Johannesburg, Kempton Express reported.
Between Tshiawelo and Nancefield, overhead power wires have been stolen on one line. Vereeniging to Johannesburg trains are also using one line on the affected section. Technicians are already working on the affected sections to repair these cables.
In Gauteng North, Mabopane and Dewildt trains are also experiencing delays of up to 60 minutes due to overhead wires damaged by a goods train at Wintersnest Station.
Trains are using one line from Pretoria North Station to Akasiaboom (on the Mabopane corridor) and Pretoria North to Rosslyn (on the Garankuwa corridor).
Metrorail technical teams are attending to the panto hook up to replace the damaged cable.
Acting spokesperson Tony Games said “We encourage commuters to seek alternative transport this morning to get to their destinations in time. We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience these unfortunate incidents might have caused to both our commuters and te employers in Gauteng. Commuters are advised to request letters at the station to submit to their employers or use the feature that is available on Go Metro to notify their employers that they are running late.”
Commuters are invited to contact Metrorail toll free on 0800 12 7070 or the customer care line on 011 773 6936 or 012 743 0030. We urge them to report all incidents to security and protection services on 011 7748566/7/8 and Pretoria on 012 315 2777/ 2566.
