Mbalula: ‘34.9’ leaders must not lead the ANCYL

Giving a report back for organisation renewal, Fikile Mbalula said in order for the organisation to be renewed, delegates have recommended that members of the youth league be within the prescribed age limit contained in the constitution.

The commission also agreed that those “declaring themselves candidates must find expression in the ANC processes”. He said delegates were worried about “entertaining money laundering and racketeering”.

Fikile Mbalula rubs his head during a media briefing about the results of the ANC’s Strategy and Tactics panel at the party’s 54th National Elective Conference at Nasrec, Johannesburg on 20 December 2017. Nathi Mthethwa and Mbalula spoke about changes in the panel’s policy, the importance of gender equity and the need to institute an inquiry on state capture. Picture: Yeshiel Panchia

He said it was also proposed that the elections of leadership must ensure continuity and renewal and that “two centres of power must be managed”.

Delegates also proposed that there be provisions for gender equity in leadership positions so “we don’t end up in bloodbath”.

“On the council of elders it is proposed that a council be established of former senior to advice and engage on ANC credibility,” he continued.

The conference also recommended there be expedient “implementation of recommendations on state capture, including the establishment of the commission of inquiry”.

It was also proposed that “powers of the integrity commission must be in the ANC constitution” and that it  must reports its work to the NEC.

The party also addressed the question of party members taking to court and members proposed interventions.

“We must have internal mechanism to combat courts to resolve ANC disputes” and “allegations of gatekeeping must be investigated”.

The conference also resolved that the NEC must facilitate unity betwee MKMVA and MK council and “inclusion of all MK ex-combatants”.

ANC leaders days on tweeting to their heart’s content may be over, as it was proposed that this be managed.

“[It was agreed we should] develop protocol on social media.”

The commission also recommended that the 54th conference ratifies recommendations from the 5th policy conference. Conference also mandated the NEC on areas where work has not been concluded, finalised or referred to structures towards the National General Council (NGC).
