Maxwell SA tour dates confirmed

Soul singer Maxwell recently addressed his South Africans fans on Twitter, piquing their interest by asking if they were ready for some unspecified treat. That mystery has now been revealed, with the American singer officially confirming the dates for his South African tour.

The two-time Grammy Award-winning singer will perform two concerts while in the country, the first on Thursday, 5 December 2013, at Cape Town’s Grand Arena and the next at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg on Saturday, 7 December.

Born Gerald Maxwell Rivera in Brooklyn, New York, Maxwell’s music has throughout his career extended over various genres, including R&B, funk, and soul. He is, however, considered as one of the forerunners of the neo-soul subgenre of the late 90s, alongside other artist like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu.

Maxwell enjoyed great success with his 1996 debut album, ‘Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite’, releasing two more studio albums before going on an eight-year hiatus.

In 2008, he made his comeback at the BET Awards where he responded to questions about his lengthy break from music, explaining that he wanted “to just take time off. The music industry has so much competition and there was no rush for me”.

He officially returned to the music scene in July 2009 with the release of ‘BLACKsummers’night’, which is said to be the first album in a planned trilogy. The second album in the trilogy, ‘Summers’, will be out in 2014.
