#MandelaDay: what South Africans are doing with their 67 minutes

The 18th of July is dedicated to giving back to the less fortunate in commemoration of the late Nelson Mandela.

This day was launched on his birthday, July 18, back in 2009 by the United Nations General Assembly. The day celebrates the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, who served this country for 67 years.

Politicians, celebrities and public figures around the country are all doing their bit to give back to the community.

Every year, former Miss South Africa and businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo spends Mandela Day giving back. This year she helped launch #TheRedScarfChallenge in support of the Thembekile Mandela Foundation.

The campaign helps girls in informal settlements and rural areas who miss school during their monthly cycles.

See below how other South Africans are spending their #67Minutes (refresh for updates).

🌺🌺SEE DETAILS ON FLYER🌺🌺 According to a study by OSISA, a girl in the rural areas and informal settlements loses on average 50 days of schooling per year due to lack of sanitary wear. I therefore challenge you to participate by donating funds to buy sanitary wear for the girls within the project, all we need is R250 a year per young woman. The #RedScarfChallenge is a campaign where the participant donates R250 wears a red scarf and takes a selfie, uses the hashtag #RedScarfChallenge and challenges 5 friends or more to the same to create awareness and ofcourse you can donate howere much you can for this worthy cause.
