Man injured in an explosion in Menlo Park

It is alleged a homeless man threw a sack in the fire, and everything exploded.


A 40-year-old man suffered serious burns when an explosion went off as he was warming himself in an open fire in Menlo Park, Pretoria, on Thursday morning, Pretoria East Rekord reports.

According to Netcare 911, a group of people was sitting around the fire off the road in Brooks Street, Menlo Park, when the explosion went off. A homeless man allegedly joined them and threw a bag with unknown contents into the fire, Netcare 911 said in a statement.

A little while later there was an explosion, and the man who was closest to the fire suffered the burns and sustained a serious compound fracture to his arm.

Netcare 911 responded to the explosion, and the injured man was attended to by an advanced life support paramedic, and analgesic medication was administered to control the pain he was in.

He was stabilised at the scene and transported by a Netcare 911 ambulance to hospital.
