Man hangs himself in court cells

A suspect believed to be 37 committed suicide in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court cells, on the West Rand.

Krugersdorp police spokesperson Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said the suspect hanged himself after he had appeared in front of the magistrate on Tuesday, Krugersdorp News reported.

His case was postponed again, and he would have remanded in custody until his next appearance.

“It is alleged the 37-year-old hanged himself using the lace of his hoodie,” Mashale said.

The suspect was recently arrested for malicious damage to property and domestic violence. He had made an initial appearance, but the case had been postponed until January 31.

The man was declared dead on scene. An inquest has been opened.
