Man caught with fake money

The suspect had approximately R30m in counterfeit money.


Sandton Police in Johannesburg arrested a 22-year-old foreign national for theft and possession of counterfeit money, Sandton Chronicle reports.

Constable David Mothapo, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station said: “The suspect was arrested after he allegedly scammed an unsuspecting 57-year-old victim into investing money with a promise of getting great returns from the investment.”

Mothapo said after the suspect was arrested approximately R30 000 000 in counterfeit money was allegedly found in his possession.

“The suspect already made away with R4 600 000 from the victim.”

He will appear in court soon. Mothapo said the police wants to warn residents to be extra vigilant and practice caution when they consider investing.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t. We advise residents contact the police immediately if they suspect that a potential investment is a scam.”
