EFF leader Julius Malema, flanked by his fellow national executives, on Friday was busy holding discussions with the management at Johannesburg Central Police Station regarding corruption and fraud charges they were laying against Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba and state logistics firm Transnet’s leadership.
Malema arrived at about 12.20pm and joined other EFF leaders at the station’s main entrance. The group went into a room at the charge office, and they met with the station’s management.
They planned to submit a document containing allegations of fraud and corruption against Gigaba, the Transnet board and four foreign companies involved in fraudulent tender activities at the firm.
The Transnet board allegedly inflated prices submitted by the companies, making the state-owned enterprise pay almost twice the original bidding prices of the companies. The firms bid to supply 1 064 locomotives to Transnet.
Malema believes a total amount of R17 billion went into the pockets of Transnet directors and government officials.
Today the EFF leadership went to the police station to lay charges against Gigaba and the Transnet directors for the alleged activities that happened when Gigaba was still the minister of public enterprises.
The foreign companies involved were Bombadier of Canada, General Electric from US and two Chinese firms, China South Rail and China North Rail.
A huge crowd danced and toyi toyi-ed outside the station to freedom songs blaring from a sound system. The situation was peaceful with no incidents reported.
