Makhura becomes acting chairperson as Gauteng ANC sets conference timelines

The Greater Johannesburg, Greater Tshwane, West Rand and Ekurhuleni regions must hold conference by March 2018 and the Sedibeng region by June 2018.

Gauteng ANC provincial deputy chairperson and premier David Makhura took the reins as acting provincial boss soon after Paul Mashatile was elected as the treasurer-general of the organisation.

ANC Gauteng was guided by section 12.14 of the ANC constitution, which states: “A member who is elected to the NEC shall resign from any lower executive structure in the ANC.”

By implication, the ANC in Mpumalanga and Free State may soon make similar arrangements similar to Gauteng. In the Free State, the interim provincial structure and provincial convenor will be tasked with taking a decision to ensure compliance with the constitution.

This was communicated after the province held both the special provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting and annual ‘January Lekgotla’ this past weekend. Another major decision was “that all structures which were due to hold Conferences in October and November 2017, should do so by March 2018”.

This decision is applicable to the Greater Johannesburg, Greater Tshwane, West Rand and Ekurhuleni regions.

It was all reaffirmed that “that all structures which are due to hold Conferences this year should do so not later than June 2018”.

This decision is applicable to the Sedibeng region of the province. The meeting also filled vacancies in the provincial working committee (PWC) after the election of five PEC members to the NEC.

Gauteng PEC “resolved to undertake its own programme to reconnect with the people, values and principles, which have carried the ANC for 106 years” to “win back public confidence” by addressing organisational renewal, economic recovery plan, “confronting corruption in all forms”, restoration of credibility of public institutions, “rolling out free higher education” and “accelerating land distribution”.
