Level 9 warning: Disruptive rain expected in parts of SA on Friday

Disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of potholes, settlements and low-lying bridges, difficult driving conditions expected in KZN.


The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an orange level 9 warning for disruptive rain in parts of Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo on Friday.

Affected areas include Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo DMs, Elundini, Sakhisizwe, Engcobo, Intsika Yethu, Mbhashe and Mnquma Local Municipalities, Makana, Ndlambe, Ngqushwa, Raymond Mhlaba, Amahlathi and Great Kei Local Municipalities as well as Buffalo City Metro of the Eastern Cape.

Residents in these areas should watch out for flooding of roads, damage to property, widespread mudslides, rockfalls and soil erosion.

Friday’s weather forecast

Gauteng: Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB sunburn index: Low.

Mpumalanga: Cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in the east. It will be cold in places on the eastern Highveld and along the escarpment.

Limpopo: Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread in places in the south-east.

North West: Partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the east.

Free State: Cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the east.

Northern Cape: Cloudy to partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers in the extreme southeastern. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly.

Western Cape: Fine and cool to warm in the west, otherwise cloudy in the east with light rain in the eastern parts of the south coast in the morning, becoming partly cloudy to sunny from the afternoon. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to south-easterly along the south coast, otherwise fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly. The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and cool to cold with isolated showers and rain, becoming partly cloudy during the evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south easterly.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and cold with scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread along the Wild Coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly.

KwaZulu-Natal: Cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers but scattered in the southwest. The wind along the coast will be Fresh to strong southerly to south westerly, becoming moderate from the south towards the afternoon. The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate.
