Last Winter wants another win

The expensive colt Last Winter from Dean Kannemeyer’s stable swept all aside in his three runs to date with champion jockey Anthony Delpech aboard and the combination should be up to the task again today when contesting Race 7 and top event at Durbanville, a MR 98 Handicap over 1600m.

This son of Western Winter had Delpech up on debut when a decisive winner over 1200m at Greyville and then after an 11-month layoff he returned with a gutsy win under 60.5kg in a MR 78 Handicap at Scottsville.

Then taking a big step up in class he closed his KwaZulu-Natal campaign with an impressive 2.75-length win in a 1600m MR 94 Handicap at the same venue.

Back at his base in Cape Town, the colt returns to competition after a three-month break to have his first run as a four-year-old and with a favourable inside draw should prove too good for his rivals once again.

He is likely to be followed home by four-time winner Star Chestnut who will be attempting a double. The best of the others are Captain Courteous and Union Jack who both finished second in their respective last outings.

The Kannemeyer-Delpech combination could also strike in Race 6 with Kapen Pride in a MR 81 Handicap over 1600m. This three-year-old showed good progress with Delpech aboard in his four runs in KwaZulu-Natal, finishing a close second out of 15 in his penultimate run over 1800m at Greyville.

Then in his subsequent outing when sent off at cramped odds he won impressively by an increasing 3.5 lengths over 1900m at the same venue.

With the confidence gained from that maiden win, the well-bred colt should be in the winner’s enclosure again. The pick of the others are Gyre, Twilight Trip, In The Jungle and Rocket Countdown.
