Karabo was passionate about women and child abuse, says her friend
Karabo's friend says she helped abused women and children to find healing from the things she went through in her relationship.
Karabo Mokoena’s death shocked South Africa on Thursday after her father took to Facebook to announce the death of her daughter.
“The boyfriend confessed. He killed and burned my daughter,” Tshepo Mokoena, Karabo’s father wrote on Facebook.
The young woman has been trending on social media all week. Friends and those who knew of her posted her pictures, asking that the message be spread to help them find her. On Thursday morning, Stephanie Long, Karabo’s friend again took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news.
“I posted this on the morning of the 29th not realizing that you were taken from me a few hours before. I loved you, you were more than a friend to me. I’m heart broken, how could they take u away from me RIP KayFab,” she wrote.
TimesLive spoke to Karabo’s friend, Matthew Mensah, who told them that Karabo was a gentle soul who was passionate about women and child abuse.
“I think it was her way of finding healing from the things she had gone through. She was very committed and dedicated because you sometimes find people who say they are interested but never follow through, “said Mensah.
According to TimesLive, Karabo once confided in Mensah about her abusive relationship in the past.
“She said she had been through a lot of things and you could hear in her voice that whatever it was, it was serious,” Mensah told the publication.
Her situation inspired her to launch her own nongovernmental organisation to assist abused women and children.”
The Frida Hartley Shelter for destitute women and children in Yeoville, in Johannesburg, which Karabo frequently visited, honoured her on Instagram.
“Karabo Mokoena was passionate about working with women, and she spent time with the ladies to hear their stories while sharing her journey‚” the organisation wrote.
“Our hearts are shattered that you won’t be part of the events you helped us plan.
“You were a light that brought hope to us. We will miss your funny sense of humour and overall loving and caring spirit.”
