The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Mayor Mashaba conducted a raid in Rosettenville following the protest, looting and burning of an alleged drug dealer’s house, where sex work allegedly took place, on Sunday.
The raid will last until February 19, 2017, Southern Courier reported.
MMC Michael Sun confirmed the girls used for sex work were as young as 9 years old.
In a statement, Mashaba said: “I will engage national government to assist us. I have written to the minister of home affairs to assist us. On Sunday, we found that plenty of residents did not have the necessary paperwork. This is not acceptable. No country in the world allows people to live in it without paperwork.
“I find it very strange when we South Africans accept this and do not want to talk about so many people who do not have documentation. At the end of the day, crime is not only committed by foreign nationals. All criminals shall know that crime will not be tolerated in this city.”
