Insurance claim form circulated in KZN misinterprets relief efforts

eThekwini municipality says the insurance claim form being circulated is not for the KwaZulu-Natal disaster relief and it misrepresents the City’s relief efforts.
The municipality noted the circulation of a public liability insurance claim form for flood relief disaster.
A public liability insurance covers damages that you are legally liable to pay, relating to an incident at your premises or about your business.
The municipality rectifies this misunderstanding of how the relief efforts works.

“EThekwini does not have cover for the general public against natural disasters. Only assets belonging to eThekwini Municipality are covered in terms of the Self Insurance Policy,”
“We appeal to residents to stop sharing information that is unverified,” said Chief Financial Officer in eThekwini Sandile Mnguni.
Advising those whose properties had been severely damaged by the floods and had insurance that covers such damages to approach relevant insurance companies to submit their claims.
”Those who have been affected by the floods and have insurance cover are encouraged to approach their insurance companies to submit their claims,” Mnguni concluded.
AGSA undertakes real-time audits to KZN
Meanwhile the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) will undertake real-time audits of the flood relief funds to ensure they aid the flood-ravaged areas in KwaZulu-Natal.
This comes after society raised concerns over the fear that government will pocket relief funds meant to assist the communities where the floods wrecked homes, roads and crucial infrastructure.
A real-time audit is an early audit aiming to prevent, detect and report on the findings to ensure an immediate response to prevent leakage, potential fraud, and wastage.
Real-time audits equip accounting officers and accounting authorities of public institutions to act quickly on weaknesses in controls and prevent further losses.
