Heritage Day: 11 great things to do over the long weekend

Spend your day with your loved ones at one of these events celebrating Heritage Day and South Africa's diverse cultures.


Heritage Day is a public holiday which encourages South Africans to celebrate the South Africa’s rich roots and diverse cultures.

People usually spend the day at home cooking their favourite proudly South African meals and braaing for their families.

But if you want to do something different this year, then grab the family and head to one of these events that are taking place over the long weekend.

Remember to follow the correct Covid-10 protocols at all times.

Sun City Resort

Cost: Free for hotel guests

For Sun City guests staying at the resort over the long weekend from Friday, 24 September to Sunday, 26 September, they have the unique opportunity to experience the diversity of our heritage with an array of live entertainment that will be on show at various locations across the resort.

To celebrate the Setswana heritage, the Segaetsho Cultural Dancers will conduct welcome performances across the property for everyone to enjoy.

This intriguing and provocative presentation of 60 diverse works from 40 young artists – all of whom are under the age of 40 – will be installed across seven indoor and outdoor sites at the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate, the home of Krone Cap Classique, in Tulbagh.

Join author Marc Hoberman as he relates the adventures of Oscar and Friends as part of the Table Bay Hotel’s efforts to encourage literacy, with International Literacy Day marked on September 8.

The children’s book reading accompanies a high tea at the Table Bay Hotel, one of South Africa’s iconic tourism venues, with unsurpassed views of Table Mountain.

Experience Avondale Wine Estate this long weekend

The inaugural Avondale Trail Run will be held this Heritage Day. With two different options (15km or 5km), runners will get to experience the breath-taking beauty of Avondale and the Paarl Valley.

Avondale picnics

Choose from one of six private picnic spots with breath-taking views or be seated in the shade of the oak trees next to a stream. The picnic includes a picnic basket filled to the brim with delectable treats from FABER restaurant and OCHRA Deli. Booking essential (48 hours prior). R 250 per person.

Avondale equestrian ‘bring and ride’ center

Out rides are open to the public and take place on the beautiful Avondale 300ha estate. You will have the opportunity to explore the rivers, dams, farm roads, vineyard paths, trails and mountain tracks.

Celebrate Heritage Month at Lanzerac
