A Grade R learner at the Al-Asr Educational Institute in Laudium, Pretoria, has fallen to his death in a freak accident.
Iyaad Noormohamed, 6, was playing on the jungle gym on Tuesday morning when he slipped and fell on his head, Rekord Centurion reported.
The principal, Rafiq Mukadam, said the accident happened during the first interval at about 10.30am.
“The Grade R class went out for their first normal lunch break, and teachers were supervising.”
Mukadam also said he was not sure what happened but believed the boy slipped.
“When the incident happened, a teacher was close by and found him in a semi-conscious state. He could not say anything, but his eyes were still open.”
He said the school called the Netcare 911 and Rescue 786 paramedics.
“He was stabilised on the scene then taken to Unitas Hospital, but about an hour later we heard of Iyaad’s passing.”
Mukadam said the school was saddened by the loss, but sadder that the Noormohamed family had lost a son.
“Our deepest condolences to the family.”
He also said that this was the first serious incident that led to a death since the school opened.
“Our Grade R class will also receive counselling on Thursday,” he said.
“Our deepest condolences to the family, no words can possibly be enough to console you but we leave you with the words of Allah SWT – ‘And glad tidings to those who endure – S2V155′,” said Mukadam.
Mukadam said the family, who lives Erasmia, has asked that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
The Gauteng Department of Education said that as the school is an independent school they could not give comment.
