Golfers in full swing on Mandela Day

Golfers swung their clubs for 67 minutes in aid of the Nelson Mandela Foundation at Dainfern Golf and Residential Estate’s Mandela Day event.

The event took the form of a four-ball golf day, and while the 120 participating golfers had all day to play on July 18, it was decided that R5 would be donated to the foundation for every shot taken by players during a specified 67-minute period, Fourways Review reported.

The sun shined kindly on the golfers as they played for a good cause, while the usual banter and jesting accompanying a normal golf day, obviously ensued.

“This is a fabulous initiative, the weather has been lovely and the course looks fantastic despite the season,” said the estate’s ladies captain, Joyce Hughes, in-between holes.

The estate’s general manager, Dave Weyers confirmed the event was a huge success and would definitely be held again. He was playing alongside the estate’s golf chairperson, Richard Attwell, estate chairperson, Rob Scott, and director, Ray Leonard.

The four took their time on the course to enjoy the day – they definitely did not take long because of any loose shots, although they were seen around the river once or twice.

Golfer, Jens Kamp, said it was nice to play for a good cause. “I had the utmost respect for Nelson Mandela, a man of dignity and goodwill. His example is sadly not being followed by today’s political leaders but we can still help the good causes,” he said.

The amount raised to be donated was still being calculated.
