Girl, 17, arrested for murdering man who allegedly tried to rape her

In the Maake policing area outside Tzaneen, in Limpopo, police arrested a 17-year-old girl for allegedly killing a 21-year-old man at Sofaya village, in Sekororo, in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 11, Review Online reports.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said: “The suspect was on the way to the local tavern when she met the deceased, who attempted to rape her. The suspect fought back, overpowered the deceased, disarmed him and stabbed him to death with a knife.”

“The deceased was later found by the police during their routine patrols. He was lying dead along the tarred road with multiple stab wounds,” Ngoepe explained.

The suspect handed herself over to the police on Sunday morning, May 11.

In a separate incident, another 17-year-old girl was arrested for killing her 60-year-old mother at Tshivhungululu village, outside Thohoyandou.

Ngoepe said the deceased and the suspect allegedly had an altercation after the deceased reprimanded the suspect for failing to attend school without reason.

“The suspect overpowered the elderly woman and kicked her several times, leaving her lying on the ground. The deceased was taken to the hospital, where she later died.”

The suspect will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrates’ Court soon.

“The involvement of young girls in serious criminal activities, like murder, is a matter of concern to us as the police,” said Ngoepe.

He says parents are advised to take full care of their children and prevent incidents such as the one in Maake from happening.
