Former mayor’s bodyguard jailed for involvement in murder of council speaker

Mbhekiseni Khambule, a former bodyguard to ex-Nquthu Mayor Emily Molefe has been jailed for an effective 20 years for his role in the murder of Nquthu Council Speaker, Vincent Ntombela, in 2015.

Ntombela was shot dead in his classroom, Luvisi Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal, where he was teaching, Northern Natal Courier reported.

A 13-year-old learner was also hit by a ricocheting bullet and died from her injuries, while another 12-year-old learner was shot and injured when the gunman, Sibongiseni Mdakane, entered the classroom and opened fire.

Khambule, 43, was found guilty of two charges of murder and one for attempted murder.

It was he who took the gunman, Mdakane, to the school and showed him where Ntombela was teaching.

Mdakane was sentenced to life imprisonment on June 22, 2015, for the murder of Speaker Ntombela, 47, and Elizabeth.

Judge Poyo Dlawati said Khambule, who has nine children from three different women, “will never change or rebuild his life, as he did not show any regret for his actions”.

“When parents take their kids to school they are expecting bright future for them, not death, but you planned this crime when knowing there would be children in the classroom, but you still sent the hitman, Mdakane,” the judge said.
