Five people dead in Roodepoort mass collision

An aeromedical helicopter was deployed to assist on the scene.


Five people have died in a horrific multi-vehicle collision in Roodepoort, Gauteng, on Thursday afternoon.

The accident, which occurred around 1.30pm on Peter Road, involved three minibus taxis and a heavy duty vehicle.

‘Absolute mayhem’

According to Emer-G-Med, one person is in critical condition, while five people succumbed to their injuiries.

“On arrival on scene paramedics were met with absolute mayhem. An on scene triage area was established and advanced life support paramedics worked fervently to stabilise a critically injured commuter,” Emer-G-Med said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

“Sadly five people were found to have sustained fatal injuries [and] were declared dead on arrival.

“Four others were treated for minor to moderate injuries and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care.”

An aeromedical helicopter was deployed to assist on the scene.

16 injured

In a separate accident, ER24 said 16 people were injured when two minibus taxis collided on Boundary Road in Houghton, Johannesburg.

“ER24 and other services arrived on the scene at 9.40am to find the two vehicles on the side of the road. The passengers had already climbed out of the vehicles and were now seated along the pavement,” ER24 said in a statement on Thursday.

“Medics assessed the patients and found four adults in critical condition while 12 others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.

“The patients were treated and provided with advanced life-support interventions before they were transported to nearby hospitals for further care.”
