59-hour water shutdown: These are the 50+ affected areas

Rand Water will be undertaking critical maintenance from 26 to 29 May. Here's what you need to know.

Ekurhuleni residents, brace yourselves for a lengthy water shutdown scheduled to span a whopping 59 hours.

Rand Water will be carrying out maintenance on the water supply system from 6pm on Friday, 26 May, until 5am on Monday, 29 May.

The system will take about 3 to 5 days to fully recover.

Massive water repair

During this period, Rand Water will halt water supply to conduct crucial maintenance on the water network.

The maintenance upgrade involves integrating the new M9 pipeline into the existing system, which necessitates a complete shutdown of water supply for nearly two and a half days.

The shutdown will particularly impact five Ekurhuleni reservoirs:

  • Duduza
  • Nigel
  • Springs
  • KwaThema
  • Brakpan

As a result, all areas reliant on these reservoirs will suffer a water outage.

Nigel water outage

The city is not leaving Nigel residents high and dry. Water tankers will be deployed to serve the affected areas, with various designated tanker points, including:

  • Nigel Customer Care Centre
  • Angelo Mall
  • Nigel Swimming Pool next to Kingsway Park
  • Ferryvale Spar
  • Alra Park Clinic
  • Mackenziville Mosque
  • Alra Park Paypoint/Community Hall
  • Gazelle Drive next to Nigel secondary school

City spokesman Zweli Dlamini urges residents to store enough water for basic use during the outage.

Industrial customers

The city is calling on industrial customers, including hospitals, clinics, retirement homes, and schools, to fill up their internal storage tanks and use water sparingly until the system has fully recovered.

Two metered filling points have been arranged for industries in Springs and Brakpan, enabling companies to fill up their own tankers.

However, it’s crucial to note that the estimated recovery of the system after the shutdown is expected to be between three to five days.
