EFF calls Ramaphosa’s election ‘illegitimate’

The Economic Freedom Fighters have called the ANC president's election as state leader illegitimate.

The Economic Freedom Fighters have called the ANC president’s election as state leader illegitimate.

“The EFF notes the illegitimate election of Cyril Ramaphosa as President of the Republic of South Africa. We see it as an illegitimate move because parliament should cleanse itself of all the Constitutional Court rulings that have found it to be in violation of the constitution in that it failed to hold the executive accountable. This failure to hold the executive accountable means there can not be a new cabinet that rises out of this parliament with legitimacy,” the party said in a statement.

The organisation walked out of parliament which sat to elect a new president this afternoon following Jacob Zuma’s resignation as state president last night.

In its statement, the EFF calls for the dissolution of parliament and for an early election.

“Ramaphosa’s rise despite this reality should mean he is afraid of the electorate and wishes to fulfil his immediate career interests. To rise without a popular election means this is a mere elite pact which does not have the democratic blessings of our people,” the party said.

The EFF was not the only organisation to call for parliament to be dissolved and for elections.

Congratulating Ramaphosa for his election as the country’s president, DA leader Mmusi Maimane said: “This is a moment in our country where we must move section 50 of the Constitution and go back to the people of SA and ask them for a fresh mandate.”
