As people around the world mark Earth Day on 22 April, tech companies have come under the spotlight to manufacture greener products to protect the environment.
While only a single day has been dedicated to Earth Day, it is clear that a lot more needs to be done to ensure the ‘blue marble’ that billions call home is protected.
Many tech companies have stepped up the green initiatives to protect mother earth and among them is OPPO.
As a global technology company, OPPO also prioritises its responsibility as a global corporate citizen, adopting a long-term commitment to sustainability.
From green operation and product design, to public awareness raising for sustainability issues, OPPO is continually utilising its technology and brand power to promote a greener future for the planet.
The company has adopted what “3R+1D” internationally recognised green packaging principles, focusing on reduction, recyclability, reusability and degradable.
Through this program, OPPO has been able to reduce the amount of plastic used in its packaging, use recycled materials where possible, increasing product lifecycles and repurposing e-waste.
The volume of electronic waste generated globally has grown by 21% over the past 5 years, making it the fastest growing category of household waste. Despite this, only 17.4% of electronic waste is recycled.
In recognition of the long-term threat that electronic waste poses to the environment, OPPO is making its products more durable. It has also established recycling programs for wasted electronic products to minimise the negative impact on the environment.
OPPO also helps promote the recycling of waste electronic products through its industrial and NGO partnerships.
The company was also one of the first smartphone manufacturers to join the Eco Rating labelling scheme — a program created by a number of leading operators in Europe to evaluate the environmental performance of mobile phones across their entire life cycle.
Through its participation in the scheme, OPPO is working with others in the industry to drive sustainable transformation.
Protecting Earth is the shared responsibility of the billions that occupy this beautiful planet.
OPPO says it believes that through technological progress and collective action from everyone, it can help protect Earth’s natural environments.
Meanwhile, Google has also shown its support for Earth Day with a doodle that shows the impact of climate change.
The annual Earth Day Doodle features real time-lapse imagery from Google Earth and other sources showing the impacts of climate change across the planet.
