Decorated police officer bitten to death in bizarre cell attack

A senior police officer was allegedly attacked by a woman awaiting trial during a routine cell visit in Mpumalanga, Middelburg Observer reports.

It is alleged the police officer went into the cells as per the procedure to provide medication and clothes to one of the suspects, who is suspected to be mentally ill.

The lieutenant-colonel went to wake the detainee and was suddenly faced with a sudden assault. The suspect jumped on the police officer, grabbed her by her hair and banged her head several times against the wall.

The officer was also bitten in the neck and fellow officers rushed to her assistance. She was, however, fatally wounded and died of severe blood loss.
