Campbell was removed on Thursday after 126 councillors voted in favour of the motion, while 91 voted against it.

Campbell was removed after a coalition of opposition parties last month removed the DA councillor Raymond Dhlamini as a council speaker and voted in EFF councillor Nthabiseng Tshivhenga as speaker.

At the time, 139 councillors voted in favour of his removal, while 79 voted against the motion.

‘Service delivery’

ActionSA is one of the parties that voted against the motion to remove Campbell, in line with its commitment to keep the ruling party and the EFF coalition out of power.

“While ActionSA remains concerned about the DA-led coalition and Mayor Campbell’s inability to improve service delivery, we believe that things would be considerably worse under an ANC-EFF coalition.”

“We promised to become a constructive opposition in the Ekurhuleni council to ensure that better services are delivered to the city’s residents. ActionSA also committed to continuing voting for a DA candidate in a bid to keep the ANC out of power.”

But according to African National Congress’ TK Nciza, the motion to remove Campbell was not a collaboration between the ruling party and EFF, but all minority parties.

“This is not about us, but the people,” he told Newzroom Afrika.

Following Campbell’s removal, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has started setting up for the election of a new mayor on Thurday night.
