John Steenhuisen emerges victorious

John Steenhuisen has just been announced as leader of the Democratic Alliance.

He went up against former mayor of Joburg, Mpho Phalatse.

Steenhuisen, who is also a seasoned politician, was widely touted as a shoo-in for the position as he led the party since the exodus of black leaders, described by some as some of the DA’s darker moments in history.

Tributes pour in for Jeremy Gordin

Tributes poured in yesterday for retired journalist Jeremy Gordin who was murdered in his house in Parkview, Johannesburg, on Saturday night, in an apparent home robbery.

One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane said: ‘This is a tragic story and we must nev-er get used to this. We must address crime in this country.”

ANC visits Russia in anti-West move

ANC visits Russia

South Africa’s governing ANC party said Saturday that it had sent senior officials to Russia to discuss “recalibration of the global order” with President Vladimir Putin’s party.

“The visit follows an invitation from United Russia Party, Russia’s largest political party and a longstanding ally and friend to the ANC,” the ANC said.

Thabo Bester escape: ‘extraordinary lengths’ to obtain

More details are continuing to emerge on the daring prison escape of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester.

Bester’s partner, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, reportedly went to extraordinary lengths to obtain the stand-in corpse from a state morgue in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, that was initially believed to be that of Bester, the Sunday Times reports.
