DA’s Cilliers Brink elected as City of Tshwane mayor

Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Cilliers Brink has been elected the new executive mayor of the City of Tshwane.

Brink beat newly sworn-in Congress of the People (Cope) councillor Ofenste Moalusi by 109 to 102 votes.

Alleged Parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe referred for psychiatric evaluation

Alleged Parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe has been referred for psychiatric evaluation at Fort England Psychiatric Hospital in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.

Mafe on Tuesday appeared in the Western Cape High Court for a pre-trial hearing following his last court appearance earlier this month.

Unjustified price increases for essential food worries Competition Commission

The Competition Commission has expressed concern about unjustified price increases for essential food items, which include sunflower oil, white and brown bread and maize meal, as well as frozen chicken portions, one of the few sources of protein that should be affordable.

According to the commission’s latest Essential Food Pricing Monitoring (EFPM) report that covers food prices from 2021 to 2022, food prices continue to be elevated and vulnerable to supply shocks although the effects of the pandemic on many markets have largely subside.

Cold front expected to make landfall in Western Cape on Tuesday evening

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says the cold front approaching from the south west of the country is expected to make landfall over the western parts of the Western Cape later on Tuesday evening.

According to the weather service, the cold front will be accompanied by scattered showers and thundershowers.

Real Housewives’ Nonku Williams is engaged to her ‘Rough Diamond

From the moment their relationship first appeared on screen, there have been questions about the authenticity of the relationship between Real Housewives of Durban stars Nonku Willams and Dumisani Ndlazi popularly referred to as ‘Rough Diamond’.

Ndlazi joined the show in the third season which is currently airing on the streaming platform Showmax and he is said to have come into Nonku Williams’ life after she had practised celibacy for a year.

Bafana bounce back to edge Liberia and seal Afcon finals spot

Zakhele Lepasa and Mihlali Mayambela were unlikely heroes for Bafana Bafana on Tuesday, as their goals secured South Africa a place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals, with a 2-1 win over Liberia at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia.

The victory makes amends for Bafana’s 2-2 draw at home to Liberia last Friday and means that Hugo Broos’ men will go to the Ivory Coast early next year, whatever happens in their final qualifier at home to Morocco in June.
