In today’s news update, the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria heard that one of the five men accused of killing Senzo Meyiwa insisted on making a confession. This as the defence argues the confession was not made freely and voluntarily as one of the suspects, Bongani Ntanzi, was allegedly assaulted days prior to making the statement.
Around 543 miners downed tools in Springs, Eastern Johannesburg, demanding that the employer recognise trade union Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) as the majority union.

‘He really wanted to speak’: Accused in Senzo Meyiwa trial not ‘compelled’ to make confession
The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has heard that one of the five men accused of killing Senzo Meyiwa insisted on making a confession. The state called new witness, Evelyn Tshepiso Motlhapeng, to give evidence in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday.
A trial-within-a-trial is being held to determine whether the alleged confession statements of accused one, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, and accused two, Bongani Ntanzi, could be admitted as evidence in the main trial.
More than 540 miners held hostage underground in Springs
Around 543 miners are currently being held hostage in Springs, Eastern Johannesburg, allegedly by representatives of the trade union Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).
Amcu representatives reportedly blocked access to the GoldOne-East Modderfontein mine and prevented night shift workers from leaving.
There have reportedly been injuries underground but medics have been prevented from accessing the scene.

Chiefs sack Ntseki after Carling Knockout exit
Kaizer Chiefs sacked head coach Molefi Ntseki on Monday, just two days after the side were knocked out of the Carling Knockout in the first round by AmaZulu.
Chiefs have appointed Cavin Johnson as interim head coach, after only recently hiring him as Head of the Youth and Development Academy.

World Rugby have said they are reviewing the allegations of suspected racist behaviour on the part of Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi.
Mbonambi has been accused by Tom Curry of using a racist slur against him during the Boks’ 16-15 Rugby World Cup semi-final win against England in Paris on Saturday.
