Despite concerns raised about the rickety Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium, the Mangaung Metro Municipality said it is ready to host the African National Congress (ANC) for its 111th birthday celebrations.
The ANC’s January 8 Statement celebration is expected to take place at the stadium on Sunday.
Concerns
Concerns about the facility were raised by Mangaung’s acting city manager Tebogo Motlashuping in a letter dated 21 December 2022.
Motlashuping warned that the northern part of the stadium “sunk after construction, toilet facilities were vandalised, there was no running water from the taps and no electrical or fire certificates were available”.

Nothing to worry about
However, Mangaung Metro Municipality said the concerns are “misplaced”.
“Following reports about the state of the stadium to host the event, the City would like to put it on record that the concern is misplaced. Work has been ongoing to ensure that the issues that were raised are attended to.”
It said the stadium was initially the home ground of Bloemfontein Celtics, which played a role in the maintenance of the facility.
Maintenance
“As soon as Celtics was sold and relocated, the stadium was open to use by members of the public for recreational activities. As a result, there are certain areas that needed the City’s attention, which have since been attended to.”
“The grading certificate has been issued. We can confirm that there are water connections, and ablution facilities are ready to accommodate the number of people expected, among other matters. The City is working together with representatives of the political party to ensure that the community of Mangaung is not inconvenienced by the weekend’s activities,” it said.
Considerations
The Mangaung Metro Municipality has urged ANC members and revellers to be considerate and cooperate with law enforcement officials.
“We need to be sensitive to residents and the broader community around the stadium precinct. Law enforcement officials will be working together with the SAPS to ensure order and security around the vicinity of the stadium, and the city at large,” it said.
