Boy, 14, resuscitated after drowning in dam

A 14-year-old boy was rescued from drowning in a dam in the Langefontein, Molweni area in Durban.

Upper Highway volunteer paramedic, Allan Cutten, said the South African Community Crime Watch medics received a call about the drowning on Wednesday, Highway Mail reported.

“On arrival, we found that residents had pulled out the boy and a local nursing sister started treating the patient.

“A successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation was preformed. The boy was stabilised and handed over to ER24 advanced life support paramedics. He was then transported to RK Khan Hospital,” said Cutten.

He said it is fortunate that the boy was rescued in time. “This could have ended so badly. According to the people in the area they are always chasing the children from the dams but they keep coming back.”

Cutten shared some tips and said the most important thing is to make sure there is supervision, as dams can have sudden drop offs.

“Educate your children not to swim in dams as they are continually being told that they cannot swim there. Ensure your children are water wise,” he said.
