Apology to Duane Vermeulen on his non-deletion of image of Steve Hofmeyr

The Springbok rugby player says he never uploaded and then deleted a picture of himself with Hofmeyr on Twitter.

An article in The Citizen on 22 March 2019 stated that Duane Vermeulen had tweeted and later deleted a photograph of himself with musician Steve Hofmeyr due to controversy about Hofmeyr.

Vermeulen says he did not post the photo on Twitter, and therefore could not have removed it. The Citizen erred on this fact by accepting social media allegations from other active users that Vermeulen had placed the photo on Twitter and later removed it.

The focus of the article was on fans’ reaction to the incorrect perception that he had tweeted and deleted the image, as some of the tweets used in the article had stated. The Citizen relied on the screenshots provided in the responses and not Vermeulen’s Instagram account, where the image was posted and currently still exists.

The Citizen regrets the error and apologises to Vermeulen.
