All change at Desert Race

To start with race headquarters will move from Kumakwane, on the outskirts of Gaborone to the west of the city with the area still to be announced. The South African National Off Road Racing Association (SANORA) which organises and promotes the Donaldson Cross Country Championship is also looking at strengthening its relationship with Botswana Motorsport, and when necessary enters into agreements with clubs and service providers to assist with the organisation of events.

“We have a close relationship with Toyota, the event sponsor and will continue to work closely with the Botswana Government, Botswana Police Service, Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO), Botswana Motorsport and other sponsors and service providers,” said SANORA chief executive officer and MSA Cross Country Commission president Richard Schilling. “In this regard we are looking to involve all the stakeholders who contribute to the event.”

Schilling added the decision to switch race headquarters from Kumakwane had been taken as a result of a request from BTO. This policy was in line with Botswana’s desire to involve different communities in the race.

Schilling and SANORA route director Adri Roets will shortly visit the proposed area. The visit will make certain all the necessary requirements are in place to meet the high standards set for organising races.

Schilling added that after the reconnaissance visit to Botswana a series of meetings would be set up with Toyota, the Botswana Police Service, Botswana Tourism Organisation and Botswana Motorsport. These meetings would set up the appointment of an organising committee and a timetable for the organisation of next year’s race.

The 2014 Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race from 27 to 29 June will once again be part of the Dakar Challenge. Winners of the challenge will win a free entry into the Dakar Rally in South America in 2015.

“The event is a highlight of the Donaldson Cross Country Championship and draws massive support from the people of Botswana,” Schilling said. “I have no doubt whatsoever that all the systems will soon be in place to make next year’s race a success.”
