Two City of Johannesburg paramedics were hijacked at gunpoint on 2nd Avenue in Alexandra while transporting a patient to The Alexandra clinic on Tuesday morning, Alex News reports.
Spokesperson for the city’s Emergency Medical Services, Robert Mulaudzi, said two men approached the vehicle and demanded cellphones and wallets from the people on board.
“Luckily, they were left on the road unharmed and another ambulance was called to the scene,” he said.
Mulaudzi said the two men then drove away in the ambulance and later abandoned it at a nearby area. This was the second time in less than two months that an ambulance was hijacked in Alex.

“Not so long ago, another ambulance was hijacked on 12th Avenue, it is disturbing to see that these things happen while paramedics are on duty.”
He said the incident had left many paramedics in fear.
“Right now, most of our crew members are traumatised. These kinds of incidents are creating panic and fear to our emergency services personnel who are supposed to render [these] essential services.”
Mulaudzi urged residents to protect paramedics while on duty.
