WATCH: Man destroys DStv satellite dish in support of Steve Hofmeyr

The man says he chooses Hofmeyr and Afrikaans over DStv.

Afrikaans musician Steve Hofmeyr’s supporters have taken to social media to boycott MultiChoice, while others have destroyed their DStv satellite dishes and decoders after its decision to ban his content on its platforms.

“We are committed to the building of a non-racial society and strongly condemn any acts of discrimination. MultiChoice is proud of its support for Afrikaans, not only our investment in content for our DStv platforms but also our sponsorships of festivals, events, and the broader Afrikaans performing arts sector. Our commitment to Afrikaans and all local languages will not change,” MultiChoice’s group executive for corporate affairs Joe Heshu in a statement on Tuesday.

But his supporters have rallied behind him and accused MultiChoice of censorship.

In a video recently shared by Videos South Africa on Facebook, a man can be heard instructing another to take down his satellite dish in protest before destroying it with a hammer.

He says in Afrikaans: “Is it loose? Pull it down, it’s rubbish. It’s either you [DStv] or Afrikaans and I choose Afrikaans. I will never choose DStv over Afrikaans. I’m finished with MultiChoice. Finished! Hit it! Hit it and fold it neatly, we’ll put it on the road for the people who collect scrap metal. They have decided they don’t like our Steve and Afrikaans, and I don’t like giving them my money anymore. If they want to destroy our language and land then we won’t give them anymore money. We won’t pay them anymore.”

In another video, a woman is seen destroying the decoder in support of the musician.

Others have since taken to social media to announce they will be moving to Netflix and other streaming services, and called on others to cancel their DStv subscriptions.
