LISTEN: Fake police officers believed responsible for Centurion hijackings

A spate of hijackings along the R55 are being committed by fake police officers, according to a social media post from a private security company.

Fake police officers are believed to be responsible for some hijackings on the R55 in Centurion.

Centurion residents living close to the R55 have recently complained about a spate of hijackings along this road.

A social media post now claims that the thugs are posing as police officers to hijack people and follow them home.

According to the post shared by a private security company, “in some cases the criminals seem to randomly choose targets and could be using one to three vehicles simultaneously”.

Ward councillor Kingsley Wakelin said there was such an incident in the Amberfield area recently.

Wakelin said the area where the incident happened is overgrown with weeds.

He reportedly asked the developer of the property as well as the estate manager to cut it down.

“It is unfortunate that we live in a world where we constantly have to look over our shoulders, but we need to start practising safety when we drive at night,” said Kingsley.

He said people need to be more aware of their surroundings.

Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto warned that if motorists felt threatened, they must put on their hazards immediately and drive to the nearest police station.
