#CabinetReshuffle: Will Zuma-Gupta linked ministers get axed?

The country eagerly awaits to find out which individuals will make it to Ramaphosa's Cabinet.

Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s election as head of state on Thursday in parliament, speculation has been rife that he would get rid of ministers he inherited from his predecessor, Jacob Zuma, when he appoints his new executive team.

Various political analysts were of the view that ministers appointed by Zuma were either linked to the controversial Gupta family or – by virtue of being deployed by him – are somewhat complicit in the shenanigans around state capture and wide scale corruption.

The names of ministers who were widely speculated to be axed include Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba, who replaced Pravin Gordhan in March last year. Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini whose handling of the social grants payment saga has come under criticism, as well as Public Service and Administration Minister Faith Muthambi.

One Zuma appointment, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, seemed to be in favour of the possible changes. He tweeted on Friday morning: “I opposed President Zuma in Mangaung he didn’t reshuffle me, don’t ask me why? Cde President Ramaphosa must choose his team and move on. We need to focus on winning the election.”
