R10m seized at Cape Town International Airport

Hawks say their next move is to investigate the paper trail and source of the money.


Customs officials seized more than R10 million and called upon the services of the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Unit members to conduct further investigations, Maritzburg Sun reports.

“The suspect was allegedly from Pietermaritzburg en route to the UAE via Cape Town,” spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court to face charges of contravening Sec (15) of the Customs and Exercise Act 91/1994 (failure to declare).

Brigadier Neil Oliver, acting provincial head of the Hawks, stated their next move would be to investigate the paper trail and source of the money.

“Obviously, our probe in this will be to determine the trail and origin of the money. We cannot rule out unearthing illicit activities as we go along.”
