SA gymnasts set for Africa champs

South Africa will be sending a group of 23 athletes to the 12th African Gymnastics Championships in aerobic and trampoline disciplines, in Walvis Bay, Namibia from April 27 and May 2.

Artistic and rhythmic gymnasts won 10 gold and 37 medals in total at the recent Africa Championships in Pretoria, with Kirsten Beckett and Grace Legote winning the individual women’s senior artistic and rhythmic crowns respectively.

While senior male and female aerobic gymnasts, Wilson Mafona and Dominique Mann, will be looking to retain the titles they won at the previous edition in 2012.

Experienced trampoline gymnast Lucky Radebe and Chezwin Timm will be looking to make their mark on the senior stage.

The trampoline competition consists of individual trampoline, synchronised trampoline, double mini trampoline and tumbling categories.

These championships also double up as Youth Olympic Games qualifiers for junior gymnasts competing in the individual trampoline category.

Gymnasts from Algeria, Angola, Congo, Egypt, Namibia, South Africa and Tunisia will be competing in Namibia.

The championship was initially meant to be held in Egypt, however, it was moved due to political unrest in the country.
