Wife killed, husband survives hit and run

The deceased was run over by the suspect while attempting to rescue her daughter, who was being assaulted.

A Woodhurst mother of three and crèche teacher was killed instantly while her panelbeater husband survived with serious multiple injuries to his body after a 23-year-old man, known to the family, allegedly run them over with his car.

The suspect, who has not appeared in court as yet, is the subject of a criminal investigation.

Sole breadwinner Salma Bibi Sheik, 43, was allegedly brutally rammed with a car multiple times by her daughter’s boyfriend on Friday, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

The only son of the victim, 23-year-old Junaid Sheik, who described his mother as a person who was loved by all, explained how the horrific incident unfolded.

“My sister and her boyfriend were in the middle of an argument while in his car. My mother tried to intervene and get my sister away from him because we were aware of his temper and feared for her safety. When she opened the door to get my sister out of the car, she fell to the ground. When he tried to drive away, he knocked my mother against another vehicle with the car,” he said.

According to Sheik, at that stage, the suspect was aware of what had happened, and he then ran over her again repeatedly.

“My father acted as a human shield by jumping in front of the car, and they were both crushed,” added Sheik.

According to Sheik, his father, Afzal Sheik Haniff sustained multiple injuries including a broken shoulder and a fractured spine. “My family and I hope and pray that justice prevails. No child should have to see something so horrific happen to their parents.  Violent criminals like him need to be put behind bars,” he added.

Chatsworth police spokesperson Captain Cheryl Pillay said: “One suspect, aged 23, was arrested by investigators of Chatsworth SAPS. Upon arrival at the scene, police found a female lying on the road. She had succumbed to her injuries.”

It is alleged the deceased was run over by the suspect while attempting to rescue her daughter, who was being assaulted.

Another family member was also seriously injured during this incident and has received medical attention.

Pillay said the accused was under police guard at a local hospital, and was set to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court soon on alleged charges of murder, attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving.
