Five cash-in-transit heists that rocked the country over the past week
The most recent robbery occurred in the Johannesburg CBD on Monday.
A cash-in-transit heist saw the closure of certain Germiston streets in the CBD earlier today (Monday). Two people were shot during the heist.
South Africa has witness a spate of cash-in-transit robberies in just less than a week.
The most recent incident occurred in Johannesburg CBD on Monday, where two security guards were critically injured.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said: “G4S security were robbed an undisclosed amount of cash by a group of men driving in a white Quantum, and security guards were shot during the robbery.”
“They never got a chance to get to the shops, they only managed to rob the G4s vehicle.” He did not say how much the robbers got away with.
Paramedics treated the wounded guards on the scene before taking them to hospital.
This comes after another two people were shot and wounded during a cash-in-transit heist on the corner of Spilsbury and Meyer streets, in Germiston, on the East Rand, on Monday.
Germiston police spokesperson Captain George Raphulu said: “Two armed suspects, driving a Toyota Rav 4, approached one of the cash-in-transit security guards.”
“One of the suspects pointed a gun at the security guards and took a bag of money from them.”
Raphulu said the suspects fired a number of shots, which injured two bystanders, before fleeing the scene. They made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
On Sunday, two SBV cash-in-transit guards came under fire from five unknown suspects and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken on the corner of Klipfontein and Carnie roads in Athlone in Cape Town.
SBV Services have offered a R1 million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.
On Saturday, armed robbers blew up a cash-in-transit van during a heist in eastern Johannesburg.
“A member of public was transported by ER24 from the scene to a nearby hospital. He sustained minor injuries when he was injured by debris during the explosion,” ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.
Three people were assessed by paramedics for injuries after the heist occurred.
SBV Services has offering a reward of R1 million after a crew of three SBV Services protection officers were attacked by an unknown number of armed suspects while servicing an ATM in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.
SBV Services SA CEO Mark Barrett said he was deeply saddened that one of their employees lost his life and that another employee was in a critical condition following the attack.
“I wish to extend our sincere condolences to the family of our staff member who passed away and also hope that our injured staff member currently being treated in hospital, recovers speedily from the injury. I also wish to commend our team for their bravery in defending this violent attack.”
He said SBV’s Risk and Compliance team is working with the authorities to apprehend the perpetrators.
