The Nelson Mandela Square has confirmed that one of its generators experienced a technical fault causing the machine to emit excessive smoke.
“The technical team is currently on site to resolve the issue,” said the mall in a written statement.
“The situation will be monitored by the technical and operations teams, and necessary measures will be taken if need be, to ensure the continued safety and security of shoppers and tenants.”
FireOps SA , City of Joburg Emergency Services and Medi Response teams were on scene, but no injuries were reported.
It’s understood the power went off due to the faulty generator which was operating during load shedding. The generator has since been switched off but the rotational power cut is still ongoing.
Part of the mall remains in darkness and shoppers who are still inside were evacuated through one exit.
Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are operating and trading as normal.
